Zaffino '21, Ian Nish '19 garner all-NESCAC baseball team honors

Hamilton College's Matt Zaffino '21 (New Canaan, Conn./Fairfield College Preparatory School) and Ian Nish '19 (Cutchogue, N.Y./Mattituck-Cutchogue HS) were selected for the 2018 NESCAC Baseball All-Conference Team on Wednesday, May 16.

Zaffino and Nish were voted to the second team and honored for the first time. A total of 22 student-athletes are on the all-conference team.

Zaffino is the first Hamilton baseball player to be named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. He's third in the conference with a .620 slugging percentage, fifth with a .484 on-base percentage and 11th with a .359 batting average. Zaffino is tied for the NESCAC lead with four triples, tied for fourth with 26 walks, tied for sixth with three homers, 10th with 30 runs and tied for 11th with 57 total bases. He finished with 33 hits in 92 at-bats and played in 33 of the team's 34 games. Zaffino recorded 10 multi-hit games and boasted a 15-game hit streak from March 19 through April 14.

Nish tied for third in the conference and matched the program record with six saves. He made 17 appearances out of the bullpen and was seventh in the NESCAC with a .176 batting average against. Nish posted a 1-0 record with a 0.45 earned run average and 20 strikeouts to just five walks in 20 innings pitched. He allowed two unearned runs in his last 14 relief appearances this spring. Nish gave up no runs on four hits in 7.1 innings against NESCAC West Division opponents.

The Continentals set a program record with 17 wins this year and went 17-10 after they opened the season with seven straight losses. The baseball team set another mark with 176 walks in 2018.
