Wood ’20 scores to lift Hamilton past Utica in OT

Aidan Wood '20 scored with 3:18 left in the second overtime as the Hamilton College Continentals edged past Utica 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer action at Love Field on Wednesday.

The Continentals (5-4-2 overall) received a free kick at midfield in the 107th minute. Eli Lichtman '18 passed the ball to Quinn O'Malley '18 down the left sideline. O'Malley took the open lane and sailed a cross to the near post. Jefri Schmidt '20 jumped in front of Utica goalkeeper Jonathan Side (11 saves) and headed the ball to the front of the net. Wood one-timed the ball inside the right post for his fourth goal of the year.

Milo Donovan '21 and Joe Harrington '18 had back-to-back chances to score with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

Waiting at the top of the 18-yard box, Donovan one-timed a clear attempt by the Pioneers that Side punched into the crossbar and out of play. Killian Clancy '18 immediately followed with a corner kick he placed inside the Utica penalty area. Harrington deflected the ball past Side but Utica's Daniel Varsames kicked the ball away at the goal line.

Pete Calleri '18 made three saves to earn the first solo shutout of his Hamilton career.

Hamilton outshot the Pioneers 36-6 and had a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Continentals hold a 37-2 advantage in the overall series against Utica (6-9-0), winning the last five meetings.

Hamilton travels to Brunswick, Maine, on Saturday, Oct. 14 for a noon NESCAC game against Bowdoin College.
