The Hamilton College men's squash team posted an 8-1 victory against Stanford University at Stanford's Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation on Tuesday.

The Continentals (3-2 overall) were playing their first match since early December. Hamilton is ranked 26th by the College Squash Association (CSA) while Stanford is at No. 32.

Five Continentals swept their Stanford opponents in three games. Colin O'Dowd '19, Callum Sondhi '20, John Sawyers '21, Tristan Chaix '20 and William Jordan '20 all recorded their team-best third wins this season.

O'Dowd (first position), Nicholas Conzelman '20 (third), Sawyers (fourth), Atticus Jones '19 (sixth) and Jordan (ninth) were triumphant in three games. Sawyers lost just 12 points in his match and Jones and Conzelman picked up their first victories this season. Chaix and Ward Urban '18 were winners in four games at the fifth and eighth positions, respectively.

Sondhi's match at the second position was by far the most dramatic of the day. He dropped the first two games against Raghav Mehrotra before Sondhi roared back with wins by scores of 11-5, 11-7 and 11-7, and prevailed in five games.

O'Dowd led the Hamilton men into this season after he made the NESCAC all-conference team for the second time in as many years in 2017. He was voted to the first team last season and was placed on the second team in 2016. O'Dowd and Conzelman tied for the team lead with 11 wins apiece last season.

The Continentals ended last season at No. 29 in the CSA rankings after they edged Stanford 5-4 in the Conroy Cup (D Division) consolation round final at the national team championships in Boston.

Jones and Chaix won 10 matches apiece, Sondhi contributed nine victories and Jonathan Ruth '18 boasted eight in 2016-17. Ruth is the team's captain this season, and Chaix received the NESCAC Player of the Week award on Jan. 23, 2017, after he defeated opponents from Wesleyan and Stanford.

Looking ahead, Hamilton College will host the 2018 NESCAC Men's and Women's Squash Championships from Friday, Feb. 2 through Sunday, Feb. 4. The Continentals last hosted the 11-team event in 2014. The CSA National Team Championships are in Hartford, Conn., in late February and the CSA Individual National Championships are in Washington, D.C., in early March.

Hamilton stays on the road for matches against NESCAC rivals Connecticut College on Saturday, Jan. 13 and Wesleyan University on Sunday, Jan. 14.
