Softball closes the season with twin bill against No. 22 Amherst

The Hamilton College softball team wrapped up a three-game NESCAC West Division series against Amherst College on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader by scores of 5-2 and 18-5 at Hamilton's Loop Road Softball/Baseball Complex.

Hamilton finished the 2018 campaign 11-22 overall and 2-10 in NESCAC West Division play.

Game One: Amherst 5, Hamilton 2

Emily Fraser '20 went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for Hamilton. Phoebe Collins '18 and Kendall Searcy '20 added one hit each. Zoe Singer '18 allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks through four innings of work for the loss.

Audrey Hansen, RobbieMarie Falasco and Sammy Salustri contributed two hits apiece for the Mammoths. Falasco had two RBIs with a double and homer. Gina Pagan picked up her 11th win of the season in the pitching circle, giving up two runs on four hits and she had six strikeouts.

Amherst (26-5, 10-1) -- nationally ranked 22nd by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll -- struck first in the top of the second inning when Julie Turner hit a bunt single, drew the throw down to second base as she advanced, which allowed Andrea Sanders to score from third.

The Continentals collected three hits in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Collins kicked it off with a one-out single through the left side, Caitlin Berreitter '20 was hit by a pitch to but two runners on and Searcy loaded the bases with an infield single. Fraser then blasted a two-run single up the middle before Amherst recorded the final two outs.

Falasco's home run in the fourth gave Amherst the lead for good at 4-2, and the Mammoths added one run in the sixth after loading the bases and scoring on a wild pitch.

Game Two: Amherst  18, Hamilton 5 (6 innings)

Helen Lin '19 was perfect at the plate with three hits and one RBI. Caroline Chivily '19 had a hit and she walked twice and scored twice. Berreitter and Liz Brautigam '19 both hit doubles and had one RBI.

Falasco finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Kate Kopatic totaled five RBIs with a double and home run. Audrey Hansen had two hits and she walked twice.

Lin gave Hamilton the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Brautigam got the inning started when she smashed a leadoff double down the left field line, Ashleah Yzaguirre '19 followed with a sacrifice bunt and Lin placed a push bunt into the gap between the pitcher and first basewoman to score Brautigam from third.

Amherst quickly took the 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Kopatic hit a two-RBI double to center field, but the Continentals returned with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take back the one-run edge. Chivily led off with a single, stole second base and scored when Berreitter ripped a double to left center. Searcy then hit a single to center field, Fraser advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Brautigam hit a deep sacrifice flyball to center field to score Berreitter.

The Continentals added two runs in the fourth when they loaded the bases off a hit, sacrifice bunt, two walks and back-to-back wild pitches, but the Mammoths maintained the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth, five in the fifth and six in the sixth.
