O’Hern drains 12 points in women’s basketball setback

The Hamilton College women's basketball team fell 57-42 to North Park University at the Salem State University Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon.

Carly O'Hern '20 led the scoring effort for Hamilton (8-1 overall) with 12 points. Mia Caterisano '19 had seven points and eight rebounds. Halie Serbent '19 totaled seven points, seven boards and three steals. Samantha Srinivasan '18 added seven rebounds and Kendall Rallins '19 chipped in three steals.

Alicia Arnold had 12 points for North Park (6-4). Shaylee Sloan totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Clarissa Ramos added 10 points and five rebounds.

O'Hern scored the first bucket before North Park scored nine unanswered en route to a 17-6 Vikings advantage after the first quarter.  

Both teams added 15 points during the second quarter. O'Hern drained a three-pointer with 1:46 left and followed with two free throws to get the Continentals within nine points, but Makenna Powell hit a buzzer beater for North Park to take back the double-digit advantage going into the half.

North Park went on a 14-3 run to gain their largest lead of the game at 22 points (46-24) with 3:42 left in the third quarter before Hamilton attempted a comeback. The Continentals scored five unanswered to close the quarter with a 48-31 deficit.

Following a Vikings layup by Zakiya Newsome to open the final quarter, Hamilton scored eight straight with help from a blocked shot by Rylie Mainville '18 and a steal by Rallins. The Vikings secured the win by outscoring the Continentals 7-3 in the final five minutes, and handed Hamilton its first loss of the 2017-18 campaign.

The Continentals will face the Salem State Vikings (3-7) in the consolation game on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. in Salem's Twohig Gymnasium. Salem was defeated by Wheaton College (Mass.) 65-52 in the second game on Friday afternoon.
