The Hamilton College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in a non-conference game against Sage College in Albany, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.
Hamilton (1-1-1 overall) held a 35-6 shot advantage, including a 7-2 edge during overtime, and all seven corner kicks belonged to the Continentals. Michaela Buzzy made 19 saves for the Gators, as Sage remains undefeated at 4-0-1. Caity Smith '22 made three saves in her Hamilton debut between the pipes.
After a scoreless first half, the Gators took the lead off a free kick in 68th minute of play. Hallie Klosterman lofted the ball to Joleen Marfone at the penalty mark who headed the ball into the upper right corner.
Exactly eight minutes later, defender Cassie Hayward '19 scored the second goal of her career. Alex Fontana '20 controlled the ball in the midfield and passed up the pitch to Hayward who put together a give and go with Cat Gambino '21 at the top of Sage's box, allowing Hayward to sneak behind the defenders for an open shot on Buzzy.
Hamilton's two best chances in extras came in the second overtime. With less than five minutes remaining, Olivia Rodrigues '21 boomed the ball up the right sideline to Kayleigh Harris '20. Harris outraced the defender and delivered a centering pass to Gambino charging into the penalty area, but Buzzy denied Gambino's shot attempt. Gambino had another chance as the seconds ticked off the clock when Hamilton was awarded a free kick just outside the Gators' box with 28 seconds remaining, but the shot sailed just right of the far post.
The Continentals return home for a NESCAC game against Trinity College on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m.
