Volleyball wraps up final day at New Paltz Invitational

The Hamilton College volleyball team dropped two nail-biters in the final day of the SUNY New Paltz Hawks Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

St. Lawrence University (5-3 overall) snuck away with a 3-0 win over Hamilton (2-2) in game one by scores of 25-20, 28-26 and 26-24.

SUNY New Paltz (6-2) outlasted Hamilton through five sets. The Continentals won the first two sets, both by scores of 26-24. The Hawks came back in the third and fourth, 26-24 and 25-20, and closed the match with a 16-14 decision in the fifth and deciding set.

Hamilton finished 2-2 at the invitational after posting two 3-0 wins over Mount Saint Mary College and Alfred University on Friday night.

Emma Parkhurst '21 led the Continentals with 52 assists (3.71 per set) and 29 kills (2.07), while also helping out the defensive effort with 23 digs through four matches. Fellow captain, Meghan Wilkinson '19 dished out 25 assists in the final match for a weekend average of 3.23 assists per set.

Giuliana Rankin '20 averaged 1.79 kills per set over the weekend with 13 kills against New Paltz alone. Nikki Matsuoka '21 picked up 31 digs against the Hawks to bring her weekend total to 59 (4.21). Matsuoka and Maddy LaPoint '22 both totaled five service aces, and LaPoint chipped in 2.82 digs per set.

Hamilton opens its NESCAC schedule in Connecticut next weekend, taking on Connecticut College on Friday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. and Wesleyan University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
