Six blocks for Boxe '22 in volleyball setback at Wesleyan

The Wesleyan University Cardinals swept the Hamilton College Continentals in three straight sets in a NESCAC match played at Wesleyan's Silloway Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals (4-1, 2-0 NESCAC), who received votes in the latest Division III Top 25 coaches poll, won by set scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-21. Wesleyan extended its win streak to four matches.

Claire Kitz '19 topped Hamilton (2-4, 0-2) with six kills and Giuliana Rankin '20 and Jane Fanning '22 added five apiece. Kendall Boxe '22 boasted five kills and a match-high six blocks. Emma Parkhurst '21 recorded 12 assists and 10 digs, and Meghan Wilkinson '19 contributed 10 assists and 10 digs. Nikki Matsuoka '21 helped lead the defense with 15 digs.

Harper Graves paced the Cardinals with nine kills and Mia Jago registered nine kills and four blocks. Mia Hogan hammered eight kills and also finished with four blocks. Kaira Muraoka-Robertson handed out 23 assists, served three aces and came away with 10 digs. Phia Bellizzi led all players with 21 digs.

The Continentals took a 9-4 lead in the third set but Wesleyan roared back to tie the score at 10-10. The score was still deadlocked at 20-20 after a kill by Kitz but the Cardinals all but clinched the match by running off the next four points.

Hamilton is at Williams for another NESCAC match on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
