Women's cross country opens 2018 schedule at home Saturday

The women's cross country team kicks off the 2018 schedule with their own Hamilton College Short Course Meet on Saturday, Sept. 8.

The 4-kilometer race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will start and finish at Ferguson Intramural Fields. The invitational field includes SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, SUNY Delhi, Wells College, Nazareth College and Division II Le Moyne College. Ithaca is ranked 10th in the Division III preseason coaches poll.

Grace Heller '19 leads a four-person senior class that also includes Mary Lundin '19, Andy Uribe '19 and Emily Yong '19. Heller and Hanna Jerome '18 represented the Continentals at the 2017 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships after they earned all-region honors.

Heller, who transferred to Hamilton after her sophomore year, finished 15th at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships and went on to place 201st out of 279 athletes at the national meet. She also took 23rd place out of 144 runners at the ultra-competitive NESCAC championships.

Brigit Humphreys '21 (75th place), Uribe (104th), Katie Cronin '21 (146th) and Haley Driscoll '21 (161st) joined Heller at last year's regional meet. At least a half-dozen newcomers are looking to crack the Continentals' top seven this fall.

Hamilton is No. 10 in the Atlantic Region in the preseason coaches rankings. The Continentals captured the team title in their own invitational and Short Course Tuneup last year, and landed in 11th place out of 41 teams in the regional championships.

The Hamilton Invitational is Saturday, Oct. 6 and the Hamilton Short Course Tuneup follows two weeks later. The Continentals travel to meets hosted by Williams and RPI, the NESCAC championship (Oct. 27) is at Franklin Park in Boston, the regionals (Nov. 10) are on Rowan University's campus, and the NCAA championships (Nov. 17) return to Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wisconsin.
