Eight of SUNY Cortland's 13 hits went for extra bases and the Red Dragons posted a 10-1 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Cortland's Wallace Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Cortland (23-9-1 overall) is ranked 24th in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 poll and is 26th in the coaches poll.
Hamilton (12-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Gavin Schaefer-Hood '21 earned a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rich Marooney '21 and a throwing error by the catcher. With runners on the corners, Schaefer-Hood and Marooney successfully completed a double steal.
Schaefer-Hood gave the Continentals a chance to add another run in the top of the third when he knocked a one-out double down the left-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A strikeout, intentional walk and another strikeout ended the inning.
Cortland tied the score with two hits in the third inning and broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth by scoring seven runs on two homers, a triple, two doubles, two singles and two walks. The Red Dragons tacked on an insurance run in both the seventh and eighth innings.
Brett Sandford '19 (1-1) finished with two strikeouts and held Cortland to just one run on two hits through the first four innings. Sandford allowed five straight hits to start the fifth before he was pulled.
Hamilton's six hits came off different bats. Schaefer-Hood doubled and walked. James Nish '19, Joe Suski '21 and Michael O'Hare '21 all went 1-for-1, and Jacob Han '21 and Ethan Murphy '22 added hits.
The Continentals play a non-conference game at 4:15 p.m. against Rochester Institute of Technology on Wednesday, April 17 at Hamilton's Loop Road Baseball/Softball Complex.
