SUNY Oneonta's Witman Hernandez scored twice and the Red Dragons posted a 4-1 non-conference win over the Hamilton College Continentals at Oneonta's Red Dragon Field on Tuesday evening.
Oneonta (7-1-0 overall) -- ranked seventh by D3soccer.com and 18th by the United Soccer Coaches -- scored its first goal 6:54 into the contest. Jeremy Pantoni received a throw-in at the top-left corner of the penalty box and chipped the ball behind Hamilton's defensive line for a one-timer by Hernandez into the opposite corner of the goal. Hernandez also scored the eventual game-winner just under 21 minutes later when he intercepted a Hamilton goal kick at the top of the box and fired a shot inside the left post. The Red Dragons held a four-goal lead at the end of the first half after scoring at 35:27 and 44:48.
Sam Dils '22 put the Continentals (1-5) on the scoreboard with his first goal of the season 16:28 into the second half. Jeff Plump '20 took a corner kick from the left side and lifted the ball to the middle of the goal area. The ball deflected off several feet before Dils buried a shot into the lower-left corner of the net. The assist was the 10th of Plump's career. Half of Hamilton's six opponents have been nationally ranked teams.
Thomas Benson '22 recorded two saves for Hamilton before he was relieved at the break by Surya Mani '23 (1 save) who was making his first collegiate appearance in goal. Oneonta's Francesco Scotti finished with four saves.
The Continentals return to Love Field on Saturday, Sept. 28 as they host Colby College for a NESCAC game at 1:30 p.m. in celebration of Fallcoming and Family Weekend.
